Armor Tutorial by Kamikazuh Armor Tutorial by Kamikazuh
I made an actual tutorial. Hoo!
I've been asked for metal and armor tutorials for quite a some time, and finally I did one. In part one I just talk about what I think of how to make a good design, and give some examples of that. Part 2 shows how I design and paint armor. I tried to cover lots of stuff that you could be interested in.

Hopefully this helps you! Would be awesome to know if it did. :]

Finished piece in here: [link]

Hey! I'm open for commissions! Character designs, concept art, whatever!

Very nice tutorial!
I just had a question since my english photoshop knowledge is not that nice. What does the "smudge tool" and the "dodge tool" you mentioned do? I just have a feeling, that you can smooth the surface with it. But I am not sure! It would be nice if you could help me. ;)

Hey thanks for doing this: What I really appreciate most is the information you gave on the various armor designs from gaming.

Awesome! Nice job with the armor. You may want to double check the chainmail pattern though, for future works.

are the colors themselves on separate layers or are all in one single color layer?

Are those brushes defaults in photoshop?

If not I'd like to know how to make them/where to get them.

Because I am just at a loss on this stupid shield and armor (so much metal and filigree @~@;; .). Shiny stuff I can do, but I need dull textures as well. I'm hoping to put this thing in my portfolio for design school, so I need the specifics ^^;

I just upgraded to CS6 (I had CS1 haha xD), if that helps with version info. c:

Also I'd like to show you when I'm done if that's cool. I'd like a creative eye (and it seems you design things already? This reason too) to eyeball it for me. And a serious critique is also highly encouraged! When I finish %D.

Some of them are I think, atleast if edited a bit. I've found rest of them from various artists.
It doesn't really matter what brushes you use. You could do all this with the default hard round brush too basically. The brushes I use are just something I've found handy through a lot of experimenting and editing. I love the second brush there, but my friend just hates using it. :P So it's more a matter of what you like to use, rather than what "does the right marks".

So my advice would be just to experiment what works, maybe do a few material studies too. :)
And yeah, I can have a look at your painting when you finish it. :]

Very useful, armour is very confusing to me.
I have been researching it for a while, this certainly helps with designing something that would actually allow the wearer to move in it!
